Back in the days when proto-metal-punk bands like Oblivion Dust were coming into their own, there lived an outfit called Tokio Hotel. They didn’t come from Japan – unless Japan happened to be a province in Germany – but they made music that would have sat snugly in any anime film. It also helped that singer Bill Kaulitz looks like a manga character.

Together with brother Tom on guitar, drummer Gustav Schafer and bassist Georg Listing, Tokio Hotel have since scored four No 1 hits and three No 1 albums in their native country (er, that’s Germany, if you still haven’t figured it out), starting with their 2005 German debut Schrei – later released in English as Scream.

Interestingly, three years after their debut, they picked up the Best New Artist award at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, and became the first German band to win awards at three MTV Awards events (the VMAs, the Latin American Awards and the European Music Awards).

So, a lot has been expected of this, their second English effort. It isn’t quite as heavy as Schrei, but there’s still enough melody and crunch to keep this in your consciousness, complete with melodrama. Gem tracks include Automatic, Zoom Into Me and Pain Of Love.

3.5/5

This is what the Jonas Brothers wish they could be like had they not have to pander to American teens. German rock band Tokio Hotel have been such a crossover success that they were asked to re-record their 2005 debut German language album “Schrei” in English, which became the hugely successful “Scream” in 2007. Another German album “Zimmer 483” followed with more success. But it is the third album that has all the emo, all the angst and all the raging that will turn it into a ebullient triumph for the young 20 something rockers from Germany.
Buy it now, play it loud.
